Highlands High School Voices for Animals Club started in 2007 when Ms. Mary Shearer, Highlands' guardian angel of animals, was approached by a group of students who wanted to take action against the terrible animal abuse and neglect they witness daily in the community around Highlands.
Since then, the club has grown significantly and two additional teachers, Brooke Orr and Tammie Bennett, joined Mary Shearer to help lead the club. Their goals are to teach students to have compassion for others, to be responsible pet owners and to rescue stray and abandoned animals around the school. By having fundraisers, the club works diligently to pay for thousands of dollars in veterinary care for rescued animals. Dr. Mark Homer and the wonderful staff at Southeast Animal Hospital provide the very best in veterinary care and moral support.
In 2010, Voices for Animals partnered with San Antonio Animal Care Services for Paw Project Block Walks. Participants helped raise awareness about responsible pet ownership for residents of our community, provided information about vaccinations, sterilization and pet food and collars. With the support of our former principal, Lorna Klokkenga, Highlands High School hosted several Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H.) units in May, June, and July 2010 in which SpaySA provided free spay/neuter services to dog owners in the neighborhood. Additional M.A.S.H. units were held in 2011 and 2012.
In the 2010-2011 school year, Voices for Animals was honored to be chosen for two outstanding programs in the communtiy. The first was to be chosen as a Team Up Challenge champion in which we were awarded a $20,000 grant by Silver and Black Give Back. We also partnered with UTSA's Learn and Serve project to develop a program to benefit San Antonio's No Kill Initiative.
In 2015, we were once again chosen as Team Up Challenge Champions for our "Paws in the Park" project that will help reduce the number of stray and abandoned animals around our campus and Southside Lions Park.
Brooke Orr currently works for another school district and Mary Shearer retired from teaching in 2014. Both of them continue to actively support Voices for Animals in different capacities.
